Get to Know Me: Penguin Random House Employee Edition

Announcement: I’ve been selected as a Penguin Random House employee ambassador!

I’ve been on quite a career journey, so to now work at the #1 book publishing company in the world doesn’t feel like real life. Someone pinch me.

Here’s an introduction to me as a publishing professional and Penguin Random House employee.

Get to Know Me: Penguin Random House Employee Edition by Morgan Vega

1. When did you join Penguin Random House?

March 10, 2025

Also, check out my job announcement! I’m still as excited now as I was then.

2. What’s your job title?

Senior Associate, Client Operations

3. What do you do at Penguin Random House?

I work in Penguin Random House’s Publisher Services division. We provide sales and distribution services to 50+ independent publishers—including Disney, Hay House, The Library of America, Marvel, New York Review Books, Smithsonian Books, Verso, Wattpad WEBTOON Book Group, and so many other clients.

Want some fun facts?

  1. We have more than 3.5 million square feet of warehouse space.
  2. We distribute to 28,000 U.S. retail locations.
  3. We ship to indies within 2 days during the holiday season.
  4. We have 400+ sales reps in the US, Canada, and International markets.

I’m on the Client Operations team within Publisher Services. My role supports the operational success of indie publishers. My day-to-day ranges a great deal, as operations includes a breadth of functions within publishing: I oversee the integration of new clients, approve financial statements, advise on all types of reporting like inventory and sales reports, liaise between clients and internal teams like Customer Operations and Stock Control, and on and on and on.

4. What publishing experience did you have prior to Penguin Random House?

My introduction to publishing actually started with the indie music magazine Under the Radar (I have a couple bylines buried on their website), but my first foray into book publishing was with the intersectional feminist publisher Kore Press. I then went on to edit part-time for a romance publisher before getting my first full-time marketing gig in publishing.

Since then, I’ve gained experience in just about every facet of publishing: I’ve managed social media accounts and designed graphics; I’ve led sales and marketing teams; I’ve negotiated licensing deals, as well as contracts with foreign publishers; I’ve overseen customer relations, publicity, advertising, print run estimates, metadata; and now I work on the operations side with all things distribution (printers, warehouses, shipments, hurts, scraps, POs, inspections, remainders, carton labels).

My most recent position before joining Penguin Random House was at one of our client publishers, tech publisher No Starch Press, as the Sales and Marketing Manager. My experience on the client side and prior knowledge of our systems and processes has made the transition to my new role smoother.

5. What’s an employee ambassador at Penguin Random House?

The goal of Penguin Random House’s Employee Ambassador Program is to highlight the voices of employees and offer behind-the-scenes content to readers. Ambassadors create content, share their perspectives, and get some free books and merch in the process.

6. What kind of content will you share as an employee ambassador at Penguin Random House?

I plan to share book hauls (like the reel below), provide book recommendations, highlight our client publishers, share publishing career tips and more about my publishing career path, and give insight into my day-to-day work as it’s not what people often think about when they think of publishing.

Penguin Random House also featured me for Book Lover’s Day! Shout out to my favorite indie comic book store, The Secret Lair Comics.

Let me know in the comments what questions you have about me, Penguin Random House, and working in publishing!

Keep up with me each week on my reading and running journey.

Processing…
Success! You're on the list.
